At the Atascadero Police Foundation (APF), we are dedicated to fostering the next generation of leaders in law enforcement and public service. It is with great honor and respect that we announce the establishment of the Luca Benedetti Memorial Scholarship Program, created in 2024 to support students pursuing careers in criminal justice and public service.
Honoring the Life and Service of Detective Luca Benedetti
The Luca Benedetti Memorial Scholarship Program is named in honor of Detective Luca Benedetti, a distinguished law enforcement officer whose career was marked by exceptional dedication and service. After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the Alan Hancock Police Academy, Luca began his law enforcement journey with the Atascadero Police Department. Over four years, he earned the prestigious Top Cop Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for three consecutive years. His unwavering commitment continued when he joined the San Luis Obispo Police Department, where he received the Top Cop Award an additional four times.
Tragically, on May 10, 2021, Detective Benedetti’s remarkable career was cut short when he was fatally wounded while serving a search warrant. His legacy lives on through his wife, Grace, and their two young daughters. Detective Benedetti is remembered for his exemplary service, his dedication to justice, and his deep commitment to his community.

The Luca Benedetti Memorial Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to students in our SLO community who are committed to pursuing careers in criminal justice or public service. This scholarship aims to support and encourage those who, like Detective Benedetti, aspire to make a positive impact on their communities.
By offering this scholarship, the Atascadero Police Foundation hopes to honor Detective Benedetti’s legacy while empowering students to achieve their academic and professional goals. This program not only provides financial support but also serves as a tribute to the values and dedication exemplified by Detective Benedetti throughout his career.
